Director of state's park system resigning

John Norbeck, director of Pennsylvania's award-winning park system for the last six years, has resigned, effective Friday.
Mr. Norbeck, 56, was appointed to head the Bureau of State Parks in June 2006 by Gov. Ed Rendell. He oversaw management of the state's 117 parks and three conservation areas covering nearly 300,000 acres, and 1,800 full- and part-time employees.
Under Mr. Norbeck's stewardship, the state's park system won the 2009-11 National Gold Medal for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management awarded by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association. The award recognizes the department's skill in long-range planning, environmental stewardship, resource management, volunteer programs and program development.
He worked for the Maryland Parks Department for 29 years prior to coming to Pennsylvania, rising to the position of Acting Associate Director, Operations.
