The campaign of U.S. Rep. Mark Critz, D-Johnstown, claims almost 950 nominating signatures filed by U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, are faulty and his Democratic rival should be kept off the April 24 primary ballot.

Congressional candidates need 1,000 valid signatures. Mr. Critz's campaign filed a petition in Commonwealth Court Tuesday claiming 942 of Mr. Altmire's 1,651 signatures were faulty, with the bulk circulated by someone who lives outside the 12th District.

Mr. Altmire's campaign could not immediately be reached for comment.

Forced to cut one of Pennsylvania's congressional districts after the last census, Republican mapmakers put Mr. Altmire and Mr. Critz into the same seat during redistricting last year. The new seat includes parts of Allegheny, Beaver, Cambria, Lawrence, Somerset and Westmoreland counties.

Petitions for GOP state auditor general candidate Frank Pinto of Dauphin County also were challenged. He is running for the party's nod against state Rep. John Maher, Upper St. Clair.
