The Allegheny County Health Department has announced this year's Breastfeeding Friendly Place Awards, which are designed to make workplaces and public places supportive of nursing moms.

Honored in the workplace category are: The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland/Pittsburgh, Downtown branch, and Community Technical Assistance Center on the North Side. Public places honored are The Nursing Mothers Room at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Oakland and Nordstrom at Ross Park Mall in Ross.

The bank gives moms time for pumping and provides a private, secure, card-accessed lactation room with comfortable swivel chairs and attached trays for positioning pumping equipment along with a sink, storage area, phone, wall sanitizer and paper towels. The North Side assistance center allows employees to bring a baby to work for up to two years and to set up baby equipment, such as a playpen and changing table, in the office.

Nordstrom has a private "Mother's Room" furnished with comfortable chairs, a changing table with nearby sink. Magee has a room for nursing mothers equipped with a pump, rocking chair, sink with counter space and other items.

An event marking World Breastfeeding Week will be held Saturday at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, North Side, with information and resources to support breastfeeding available. Members of the Allegheny County Breastfeeding Coalition mentioning the word "breastfeeding" will receive a discount on museum admission. The event is hosted by the Allegheny County Breastfeeding Coalition, a collaboration of the county health department's WIC program, Magee Hospital, The Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh, lactation consultants, public health professionals and doulas from the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Correction/Clarification: (Published Aug. 7, 2010) Only members of the Allegheny County Breastfeeding Coalition were to receive a discount to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh Aug. 7, 2010 for mentioning the word "breastfeeding." This brief as originally published Thursday Aug. 5, 2010 incorrectly stated any visitor mentioning "breastfeeding" would receive half-off admission.
