Deciding the weighty issue of who should oversee the annual inspection of gas pumps, UPC scanners, scales and parking meters in Allegheny County will have to wait until the county controller is back from maternity leave next month.

County council members on Tuesday night got their first look at an ordinance that would return to the county executive's office responsibility for assuring measuring devices are accurate.

County Executive Rich Fitzgerald wants council to rescind a 2008 law that transferred those duties from his office to the controller, but he has agreed to wait until Controller Chelsa Wagner, who is expecting a baby in the next few days, can be part of the discussion.

Ms. Wagner said if the state Department of Agriculture takes over it could save the county as much as $250,000 annually in staff costs and fringe benefits.
