Interstate 79 in Washington County has reopened after state police investigated a crash involving a tractor-trailer this afternoon.
State police said Nicholas Harrison, 18, of Canonsburg, was driving north on I-79 when he lost control near Southpointe about 1:30 p.m., crossed the median and hit a car driven by Eric Nichols, 48, of Eighty Four.
Mr. Harrison then crashed with a tractor-trailer driven by Gaetano Gambardella, 74, of Pittsburgh, who police said "couldn't avoid the collision."
Mr. Harrison, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital with "major injury." Mr. Nichols was taken to AGH in an undisclosed condition and Mr. Gambardella was not injured.
State police closed the southbound lanes between Bridgeville and Canonsburg while they investigated the crash. Northbound lanes were open but heavily congested as drivers slowed to view the crash scene.
