A group of local tennis players from Shady Side Academy will host the sixth Swing for a Cure event today at the Mellon Tennis Bubble. An afternoon of clinics for children between the ages of 4 and 13 will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Participating in the event are Emma Perelman of Squirrel Hill, a nationally ranked player, along with fellow Shady Side varsity teammates Amanda Murphy and Madison Mordoh, both of Fox Chapel.
Emma's sister, Sara, who is now a sophomore playing tennis at Cornell University, created the charity event in 2006 to honor her now 12-year-old cousin, Jacob Lichtenstein, who has juvenile diabetes.
To date, the event has raised about $35,000, according to a news release.
The cost for participants is $20.
More information can be obtained from Susie Perelman at 412-889-8903 or from Melissa Murphy at 412-298-8653.
