Teen drowns in Youghiogheny River

A 17-year-old boy died Friday night after he disappeared into the water near Yough River Park in Connellsville.

Scott Jeffries, 17, of Mount Pleasant, jumped from Flat Rock into the Youghiogheny River, shortly after 6 p.m. and tried to swim to a nearby pier. About halfway across the river, he went under the water and the person with him lost sight of him, Connellsville police said in a a news released.

Police, aided by a dog from the Fayette County coroner's office, found Scott's body shortly before 8 p.m. Police continue to investigate.
