A Sharpsburg man faces a federal charge of robbing a post office following an extensive investigation by postal inspectors.

Joseph Filbert, 49, took $569 from the Bloomfield post office, according to an affidavit unsealed today.

It said that on Dec. 14, 2011, Mr. Filbert waited in line at the post office, showed the clerk a gun, and handed over a note demanding money.

Surveillance video showed that he wore a Steelers jacket and a lime-green baseball cap. Footage from a private business' camera showed that he arrived in the area in a green 2006 Hyundai Elantra with a city residential parking sticker in the window.

A review of all 2006 Elantras registered within five miles of Bloomfield revealed just five green ones, of which just one had a sticker in the window. That belonged to Mr. Filbert's brother, who used to live in Bloomfield.

Joseph Filbert was later found at the Westmoreland County Jail, where he was being held on separate charges. His shoes, found at the jail, matched those in the surveillance footage.
