Schools delayed, roads slippery as winter storm hits Pittsburgh region

Roads and sidewalks are slippery around the Pittsburgh region this morning as the National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning north and east of the city forecasting a frozen mix of rain and snow at least into the afternoon.
While the weather service forecast predicts less than an inch of accumulation in Pittsburgh itself as well as in Washington and Westmoreland counties, Indiana and Clarion counties are expected to get between 2 and 4 inches. Between 1 inch and 2 inches is expected to fall in Butler and Mercer counties, according to the weather service.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike was operating under a weather alert with the speed limit reduced to 45 mph on a 125-mile stretch from New Stanton to Blue Mountain.
The winter storm warning -- which covers Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Forest, Indiana, Mercer, Jefferson, Lawrence, and Venango counties -- is scheduled to last until 8 p.m. The most intense portions of the storm are forecast to pass through the region through the afternoon.
