An Allegheny County deputy public defender lost her job Thursday.

Khadija Diggs, 53, was the deputy director of the trial division and joined the public defender's office in September 2004 as a supervisor.

She said she could not comment.

Allegheny County Chief Public Defender Elliot Howsie also had no comment.

The office, which came under scrutiny last year with a report from the American Civil Liberties Union that criticized how cases were being handled, includes a staff of about 82 attorneys who represent 10,000 indigent adults each year. Its budget is $7.6 million.
