A woman and her unborn child died after she was struck by lightning while hiding under a pine tree during a storm this morning in Somerset County.

State police in Somerset said that Mary H. Yoder, 36, was picking blackberries in the woods behind her home on Rockdale Road in Summit when it began to rain about 11 a.m. Ms. Yoder took shelter under one tree while her husband and two children hid under another, troopers wrote.

A lightning bolt struck Ms. Yoder, who was nine months pregnant, moments later. Both Ms. Yoder and her unborn child died in the woods.

State police are investigating.
