Reacting to longstanding demands from drivers for a cell phone lot to wait for arriving travelers, Pittsburgh International Airport will offer a free hour of parking in its extended term parking lot starting tomorrow.

Allegheny County Airport Authority officials say the lot, with the hour of free parking, will serve as the equivalent of a cell phone lot for drivers waiting to pick someone up at the airport.

Until now, drivers would have to pay $1 or more to park or wait on the berm of the airport expressway for a traveler to arrive.

In a release, the authority said the purpose of the new program is to respond to demands for a cell phone lot and to reduce congestion in the airport arrivals area and on airport roads.

Parking in the extended term lot farthest from the terminal will be free for the first hour and $1 for the second hour. After two hours, it will cost $8.
