A Mercer County police officer was shot at but not injured while responding to a 911 call Wednesday night, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The man who fired at the Pymatuning officer suffered a single gunshot wound when the officer returned fire just before 8:30 p.m., according to a state police press release.

State police said the man also shot a woman at the home that night. She suffered a single gunshot wound, according to the release.

The officer was responding to an emergency call at the house in the 3800 block of Hermitage Road when he heard gunfire coming from inside.

The officer forced his way in, and the man immediately fired at him, according to the release.

The officer shot back then ran to his patrol car to wait for back-up. The man barricaded himself inside before the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team removed him hours later, according to the release.

The investigation, in conjunction with township police and the Mercer County district attorney's office, is ongoing.
