An inmate at the Cambria County Prison was charged this morning with killing a fellow inmate over the weekend.

State police in Ebensburg wrote in a news release that William A. Cramer, 21, of McClellandtown, has been charged with homicide and assault in the Saturday death of William Sherry, 28, of North Cambria.

Authorities said they found Mr. Sherry dead in his cell at the Cambria County Prison between 9:30 and 10 p.m. on Saturday. The coroner's office an autopsy determined that Mr. Sherry died of manual strangulation, and authorities initially said they thought his roommate had used a bedsheet to strangle him.

Investigating troopers could not be reached for comment tonight and court paperwork was not available. Jail workers declined to comment on the relationship between Mr. Sherry and Mr. Cramer.

Online court records indicate that Mr. Cramer arrived in the Cambria County Prison about June 28, after spending stints in the Indiana County Prison, Fayette County Prison and State Correctional Institutes in Pittsburgh and Pine Grove. He was awaiting trial on charges of assault and harassment.

Mr. Cramer is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on the charges stemming from Mr. Sherry's death at 10 a.m. on Oct. 23. He is being held without the possibility of bail.
