Local schools win Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl

Four local high school teams have emerged as finalists from a regional science bowl held Saturday at the Community College of Allegheny County, South Campus.
The four teams were in a field of 43 seeking to qualify for the championship rounds of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Science Bowl scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory in South Park Township, according to a news release from the agency.
The winning teams that will compete in the championship rounds are Hempfield Team 2, North Allegheny Team 1, North Allegheny Team 2, and Shadyside Academy. All four finalist schools receive funds for their respective school science programs, ranging from $600 to $1,500. The finalist team that goes on to win the regional championship will receive an expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl which is set for April 25 to 29.
Four teams were also selected Saturday to receive "civility awards" for sportsmanship for their respective divisions. They are Baldwin Team 1, East Allegheny Team 2, Norwin Team 1, and Mount Lebanon Team 2. Each member of the civility award winning teams will receive a pass to Phipps Conservatory.
The National Science Bowl is an academic competition among teams of high school students who compete in a question-and-answer format similar to the television show Jeopardy. Questions cover biology, math, chemistry, physics, energy, and earth and space science.
The news release indicates that the winner of this year's national championship competition will have the opportunity to travel to science seminars and participate in hands-on science discovery team challenges.
