List of best colleges keeps CMU at No. 23

Several Western Pennsylvania campuses fared prominently in the U.S. News and World Report's 2013 Best Colleges ranking being released today.
In the Best National Universities category, Carnegie Mellon University ranked 23rd, up from last year when it shared that spot with the University of Southern California. In the same category, the University of Pittsburgh finished in a five-way tie for 58th with Fordham University, Southern Methodist University, Syracuse University and the University of Maryland-College Park. Pitt finished in a four-way tie for 58th last year.
Penn State University's main campus tied for 46th among the best national universities with the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, the University of Texas-Austin, the University of Washington and Yeshiva University. Last year, Penn State finished in a five-way tie for 45th rank.
Nationally, Harvard and Princeton universities again tied for first in the best national universities category. Among national liberal arts college, the top two spots went to Williams College, No. 1, and Amherst College, No. 2.
A survey of college administrators that accompanied the rankings put Allegheny College in a tie for the No. 1 rank with the University of Richmond among "Up and Comers," a list of those believed by those administrators to have made the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities.
The college rankings are available on newsstands beginning Tuesday.
