A Lawrence County man was arraigned on assault charges today after police said they thought he caused his twin daughters' head injuries.

Christopher Kozura, 21, of New Castle, is being held in the Lawrence County Jail on $150,000 bail, according to online court records.

New Castle police wrote in a criminal complaint that they were called to Jameson Hospital in August, when doctors told them his 4-month-old daughter had a brain injury.

Mr. Kozura told police he placed her on the bed, left the room and came back to find that she had rolled off onto the floor, police wrote in the complaint.

Doctors told police they think the girl might have permanent damage, although they do not yet know the extent of it.

During the investigation, a Children and Youth Services worker told investigators the girl's twin had been taken to the hospital a few days earlier with a skull fracture.

When police asked Mr. Kozura how that injury occurred, he said he fell asleep on a couch with the girl in his arms and awoke to find that he had tumbled onto a diaper bag near the couch, according to the complaint. Doctors told investigators the girl's injuries were more consistent with abuse.

Mr. Kozura is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 6.
