Highmark, UPMC finalize deal to extend pact

Highmark Inc. and UPMC announced today that the deal-in-principle that was announced on May 2 has been finalized.
The deal gives Highmark customers access to UPMC physicians and facilities through Dec. 31, 2014. After that date, commercially insured Highmark customers will continue to have access to Western Psychiatric Institute, UPMC Bedford and UPMC Venango hospitals, as well as certain oncology services.
The agreement is subject to the approval of the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, according to Highmark.
Highmark's existing contracts with other UPMC hospitals -- the contract with Children's Hospital runs through 2022, and UPMC Mercy's is through 2015 -- are unaffected.
