Groundbreaking tomorrow for last link of Great Allegheny Passage

Groundbreaking for the final mile of the Great Allegheny Passage trail, through Sandcastle Waterpark and the neighboring Keystone Metals property, will be at noon Friday, officials said today.
When construction is finished this spring, the trail will extend from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md., where it meets the C&O Towpath to complete a continuous 370-mile trail link from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.
Linda McKenna Boxx, president of the Allegheny Trail Alliance and a driving force in developing the trail, said the ceremony will be at noon at the waterpark, beneath the Glenwood Bridge. Construction will begin immediately thereafter and the developers have what she called "a drop-dead deadline" of April 15 to finish.
Construction will require moving utility poles on the Sandcastle site, and service must be restored in time for the waterpark to prepare for its summer season, she said.
