Former detective's age discrimination suit is dismissed

A judge today dismissed a lawsuit in which a former narcotics detective for the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office claimed that he was discriminated against because of his age, political activity and whistleblowing efforts.
U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab found that veteran detective Anthony Hildebrand didn't suggest a pattern of age discrimination by the county and prosecutor's office, and didn't file some of his claims within the statutory 300 days after his firing. His claims that he was a whistleblower can be taken up in state court, Judge Schwab found.
Mr. Hildebrand had said that prior to his 2011 dismissal he was derided as an "old man" by supervisors, pointed out a favored colleague's history of legal problems, and argued against artificial inflation of the office's caseload. He had also claimed that he was criticized for his and his wife's contributions to the campaigns of state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin, who became the subject of an investigation, and ongoing prosecution, by District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr.'s office.
