Former Allegheny County Jail guard Arii L. Metz faces a March 18 trial on charges of violating civil rights in an alleged 2010 beating of former inmate David Kipp.

U.S. District Judge Nora Barry Fischer set the trial date at a motions hearing today. Mr. Metz attended but did not speak.

Mr. Metz, 34, was charged federally after Mr. Kipp said he beat him in a cell. James Wymard, representing Mr. Metz, has said that Mr. Metz did nothing more than compel the inmate to obey orders.

The case was the first filed by U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton's Civil Rights Section.
