Trustees at the Community College of Allegheny County awarded a $20,000 performance bonus to school president Alex Johnson Thursday in keeping with his contract that allows for such awards each year of up to 10 percent of his base salary.

The vote by the full board followed a meeting by its executive committee. Trustees expressed strong satisfaction with Mr. Johnson's performance.

The payment covers the 12-month period from July 2010 through June 2011 and brought his total salary for that period to $256,076, CCAC spokesman David Hoovler said.

The board postponed a vote on the matter last fall amid fears of a major loss of county funding that did not materialize and also considered the difficult economy, board Chairman Bill Robinson said Thursday.

"We decided the time had come for us to meet our obligations relative to compensation for our president," he said. "We made a decision to do it today."
