Carnegie Museums receive $1 million grant for technology upgrades

Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh has received a $1 million grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York to upgrade the technology in its four museums.
"We are so grateful for this extremely forward-looking grant given in honor of the corporation's centennial year," said John Wetenhall, president and chief executive officer of the museum consortium.
Mr. Wetenhall said the museums plan to build network capacity "so our four museums can effectively and creatively share their great collections and extensive knowledge with the world, and also deliver media-rich gallery experiences that distinguish the Carnegie Museums from other museums in the country."
The one-year technology initiative will involve expanding network capacity by upgrading infrastructure at the four museums, including switches and routers that prohibit the use of high-speed technologies in the galleries. Bandwidth upgrades will allow for more diverse content, such as text, images and video, to be seen in the galleries.
The museums are the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History in Oakland, Carnegie Science Center and The Andy Warhol Museum, both on the North Shore.
