Animal Rescue League wins nationwide contest

The Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center got a $30,000 payoff today following three months of special adoption promotions, media blitzes and non-stop activity on Facebook and other social media.
Spontaneous cheers erupted at the Larimer shelter when a giant check was unveiled by staff from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. ARL staff, volunteers and board members had worked uncounted hours in the national challenge that had 50 contestants.
The bulk of the winnings -- $25,000 -- was a first-place finish in the Community Engagement Award. In addition to getting the most online votes -- 25,921 -- the ARL "did the best job of getting its community involved in saving more animals during the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge," said Janice Iannelli, ASPCA director of institutional giving. She and several other staff members flew to Pittsburgh to present the check.
The local shelter adopted out 2,176 cats and dogs during the contest period in August, September and October. That added $5,000 to the check because it was 533 more than during the same period last year.
"You get a plaque, too, for not only engaging the community but for saving lives," Ms. Iannelli said. "Now those 2,176 animals are sleeping in homes."
