Allegheny County executive Fitzgerald announces new kind of voter IDs

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald -- a Democratic critic of the state's GOP-approved voter ID bill -- announced a new way for getting IDs today that has not been explicitly approved by the Corbett administration.
At a press conference this morning Mr. Fitzgerald said the county's community colleges and its Kane Regional Center nursing homes would provide free photo IDs to anyone who wanted them as long as they are registered to vote and had other identification necessary for state-approved IDs.
Mr. Fitzgerald said the IDs will be printed on sheets of paper affixed with the name of the institution, the voter's photo and a five-year expiration date.
The IDs will be available within the week, Mr. Fitzgerald said.
His administration has not run the ID plan past the Department of State but he said it was authorized by the state law, which says allowable IDs include those issued by Pennsylvania senior care facilities and state-affiliated colleges.
