The balmy weather of the past few days has helped pollution levels rise across much of southwestern Pennsylvania.

The state Department of Environmental Protection has issued a code orange air quality action alert for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Air pollution concentrations may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, such as children, the elderly or people suffering from breathing issues including asthma and heart disease.

The effects can be minimized by avoiding strenuouos activity or outdoor exercise.
