13 area teachers named teacher of year semifinalists

A total of 39 teachers have been named semifinalists for the state Teacher of the Year, including 13 from southwestern Pennsylvania.

The teachers were nominated locally -- by students, parents, colleagues and residents -- and selected by a committee of the Pennsylvania chapter of the National State Teachers of the Year with assistance from the State Department of Education.

Twelve finalists will be announced next month. The state winner will be named in December.

The list includes:

Allegheny County: Clyde Qualk, Bethel Park School District; Samantha Perlik, Highlands; James Joseph Prince, North Allegheny; Dennis Dudley, Shaler Area; Adrienne Endy, Shaler Area; Jade Leung, Shaler Area; Timothy Taylor, Shaler Area; George Tepshich, Shaler Area; Frank Kruth, South Fayette; Robin Sciotto, South Fayette.

Beaver County: Daren Cusato, South Side Area. Westmoreland County: Carol Aten Frow, Belle Vernon Area; Paula Giran, Norwin.

The list also included two cyber-charter school teachers: Cheryl Clothier and Stacy McGowan, both of the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School, based in Montgomery County but serves students throughout the state.
