Dozens may have received wrong Allegheny County tax bill

An attorney says Allegheny County mailed tax bills with the wrong assessed value to homeowners who already fought to have them reduced.

Noah Fardo, a Shadyside attorney, said today at least three dozen of his clients have received property tax bills with an older assessed value, even after they won a lower rate on appeal in the ongoing countywide reassessment.

In some cases, assessments that were settled as long ago as December still aren't showing up on the 2013 tax bills, he said.

"They do need to fix it. It's an easy fix," Mr. Fardo said. "I think the county should send revised tax bills to all property owners who have won appeals since December to make sure they're correct."

Deputy Treasurer Tom Bradley said the bills were sent out with the property values he had on Feb. 15. If the Office of Property Assessment hadn't updated an individual record by then, that resident could get an outdated tax bill, he said.

The bills already have faced a beating once: In February, the county had them re-printed after discovering an error in one of the exemptions, pushing back the filing deadline.
