Dolores P. Eicher was a woman of multiple interests and talents.

After retiring from nursing in 1959, she kept herself updated in contemporary arts, helped her two daughters with interior decoration and loved going to the theater.

Mrs. Eicher, of Wyomissing, Berks County, died Monday at Reading Hospital and Medical Center due to a stroke. She was 78.

Born in Clairton, she graduated from Clairton High School in 1947. She was married to Dr. Geary M. Eicher Jr. in 1952.

The two met while he was a pre-med student at the University of Pittsburgh and she was studying nursing at Allegheny General School of Nursing. One of his classmates happened to be her relative.

"She came to my house and we started to date," Dr. Eicher said. She graduated in nursing in 1951.

She worked as the chief surgical nurse for an orthopedic group in Pittsburgh for eight years before retiring.

She loved dogs and was active in animal shelter work, her husband said. When they were younger, they would go to New York to watch plays, Dr. Eicher said. He fondly remembers going to the Pittsburgh Playhouse and out for dinner after the shows.

Dr. Eicher described her as an outgoing and religious person.

A voracious reader of magazines and books, she also loved reading the Bible. "She was interested in everything," he said.

"She had been ill for many years," said Dr. Eicher, adding that she had diabetes, back problems and heart ailments.

"She was very close to the family and was loved and cared for by all of us," he said.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Dr. Melissa J. Eicher of Wyomissing and Holly L. Eicher of Bethlehem, Pa.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Oak Hill Cemetery, Old Frame Road, Smithfield, Fayette County. Contributions can be made to the Humane Society of Ocean City, P.O. Box 1254, Ocean City, NJ 08226 or the Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741.
