Ambridge police are investigating the death of a 45-year-old woman who was found lying on a train track Sunday afternoon.

Patrolmen Zadock Dismuke said a train conductor observed the woman lying between two rails as his train headed north on a Norfolk Southern Railway track near 13th Street around 4:20 p.m. He told police he blew his whistle, but the woman didn't move and he couldn't stop the train in time to avoid going over the top of her.

Now Mr. Dismuke said police are awaiting the results of an autopsy scheduled today to determine if the woman was killed by the train or was already dead when it ran over the top of her. He said she suffered head trauma, but there were no indications that she was crushed by the train.

Police declined to release her identity Sunday evening.
