A West Virginia woman has been charged with attempted homicide after police said she tried to drown her 2-year-old son in a bathtub at a Green Tree hotel.
Sharon Flanagan, 33, of Inwood, was arrested Monday and also charged with aggravated assault, child endangerment, and reckless endangerment, Allegheny County police said.
The incident happened about 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Best Western on Greentree Road, where police were called for a possible drowning in one of the rooms. Inside, they found Ms. Flanagan's boy unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Ms. Flanagan gave detectives inconsistent accounts of what happened, police said.
Police said Ms. Flanagan told them her son had been swimming in the bathtub and either fell while climbing on the edge or went in on his own, ending up face down. Police said she told them she was unable to remove him, even as she pulled on both of his arms and, at one point, on his arm and leg.
She said she felt like something was "pulling him toward the bottom of the tub," detectives wrote in a criminal complaint supporting her arrest.
Police determined her version of events "appeared fabricated and untruthful" and she did not inquire about her son's condition or try to see him until Monday, the complaint says.
She was the lone caregiver for the boy during their stay at the hotel. The boy's father was at home in West Virginia, police said.
Court records show Ms. Flanagan has been arraigned and is lodged in the Allegheny County Jail.
