An open house will be held Feb. 7 for students from several of the center's member districts to learn about two of the 14 programs offered at Parkway West Career & Technology Center and to consider enrolling for 2013-14.

The center in North Fayette also will sponsor an open house March 6 for parents, guardians and students to walk the halls, speak to the staff and learn about course and career opportunities.

Although the Alternative Center for Education at the school will be discontinued at the end of this year, Parkway West will continue to offer vocational and technical education programs, including auto body repair, business technology, cosmetology, culinary arts, drafting and design, health assistant and welding technology.

Juniors will have to pass the new Keystone Exams to graduate in 2014 -- three years earlier than the state Department of Education requires. The exams include Algebra I, biology and literature.

School board members voted 9-0 Tuesday to require high school students to show proficient or advanced knowledge on state-mandated assessments to qualify for graduation starting in the 2013-2014 school year.

The prior graduation requirements included passing the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, or PSSA, tests -- a standard the state never had required.

The district is using eBay to raise funds to support a newly formed alumni scholarship fund.

Among the items up for auction are a Dermonti Dawson autographed photo, a Steelers fleece blanket with a Steelers mini helmet signed by 10 players from the 2012-2013 season, a Jack Lambert signed photo and seven bobblehead figures of 1970s Steelers.

The auction will open Tuesday and continue through Feb. 5. Items can be found on the eBay auction site by searching under "sports memorabilia" or by seller -- sto-rox_school_district

As more items are collected, the district will hold an auction every few months, with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
