Carlynton
Crafton Elementary will hold an open house of its new STEAM studio for parents and the community from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday. The studio will feature student stations to explore, learn and discover science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. During the open house, students will be working and will demonstrate various building projects. The STEAM studio is a room at Crafton Elementary and was envisioned and designed by principal Jacie Maslyk and the professional staff. The program is funded fully through a grant from The Grable Foundation and the Calude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
• David G. Roussos was re-elected school board president and Betsy Tassaro was re-elected vice president last Thursday.
• Carlynton has joined the list of schools who have withdrawn from the Parkway West Career and Technology Alternative Center for Education. The board voted 8-0 last Thursday to withdraw. Director Nyra Schell was absent.
Carlynton had paid about $10,000 per student to participate in the program. This year, the district had only three students in the program.
• The high school marching band will perform during spring break in the "Celebrate a Dream Come True" parade at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Students will miss two days of classes for the trip, which will be March 23-29. Band members also will attend workshops during the trip.
• The Carlynton Hockey Club has been created as a club sport and not a school-sponsored activity. The team colors and mascot will be the same as Carlynton's.
Moon Area
Jeffrey Jaworowski has been hired as an assistant middle school principal at a salary of $92,885. Mr. Jaworowski served as middle school band director and music teacher and has been with the district since 1993.
His experience includes 21 years in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard. He retired with nine years as Company Commander/Bandmaster, 28th Infantry Division Band, and as a U.S. Army Band staff bands officer.
• The Moon Drama Club will host an alumni concert at 7 p.m. Saturday in the high school auditorium. Alumni will return to perform pieces from past Moon Aera musicals, including "Godspell," "Grease," "Carousel," "Pippin," "Beauty and the Beast," "Hello Dolly," "Anything Goes," "Footloose," "The Sound of Music," "The Wizard of Oz," "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Oklahoma!" Alumni from as far back as 1981 and as recent as last year will perform. The cost will be $5 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Moon Drama Club.

Elizabeth Smith was re-elected school board president, and Kathy Evich was elected vice president last Thursday. The board will continue to meet three times each month at 7 p.m. in the high school.
Education committee/budget meetings are held on the first Thursdays and agenda review meetings are held on the second Thursdays in the superintendent's board room, 600 Russellwood Ave., Stowe. Legislative voting meetings are on the third Thursdays in the high school cafeteria,1105 Valley St., Stowe.
West Allegheny
The West Allegheny school board Dec. 5 approved refinancing nearly $8.7 million in debt from a 2003 bond issue to save more than $1.1 million in interest over the next 12 years, business manager George Safin said. Taking advantage of lower interest rates, the district has saved a total of about $6 million over the past year by refinancing existing debt.
• Debbie Mirich was re-elected school board president, and Eugene Sciulli was re-elected vice president Dec. 5. The board will continue to meet at 7:30 p.m. on the second and third Wednesdays in the Donaldson Elementary School cafeteria, 600 Donaldson Road, North Fayette.
