The Center Area High School 2012 Alumni Hall of Fame has announced honorees to be inducted into its 10th class during a dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 in the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church hall in Center:
• Tony Amadio, Class of 1969, of Center, Beaver County Commissioners chairman. Mr. Amadio retired after more than 30 years as a teacher, has 24 years of experience as a Center supervisor, and is a 41-year member of the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department.
• Nicole Begg, Class of 1990, of Richmond, Ky., a school psychologist in Kentucky and Louisiana. She joined MindPsi: School Psychological Services, PLLC, a private practice specializing in child and adolescent services in Richmond in July.
• Stephen D. Colafella, Class of 1988, of Mars, a criminal trial lawyer. He began his work in the Beaver County Public Defender's Office and during his tenure with that office, he received jury acquittals in all but one case. He tried his first capital murder case at the age of 27.
• Cindy Kotun, Class of 1973, of Coraopolis, a nurse with Vitas Hospice and the Heritage Valley Health System rheumatology practice. She received the American Cancer Society Memorial Award in 1996 and Volunteer of the Year in 2001.
• Eric Lechman, Class of 1987, of Toronto, Canada, an associate researcher at the Ontario Cancer Institute. He is studying the molecular role of non-coding RNAs in the control of normal and malignant hematopoietic stem cells.
• Dr. William Greer, Class of 1990, director of orthopedic sports medicine in the Georgetown Health System at Murrells Inlet, S.C. He is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine with an interest in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, elbow and knee.
• Darrin Taormina, Class of 1983, a clinical assistant professor of anesthesiology at UPMC St. Margaret. He is medical director of UPMC St. Margaret Harmar Outpatient Center and was instrumental in the planning, development and opening of the ambulatory center in March 2007.
• Dan Young, Class of 1984, an adviser with Wells Fargo in Chicago. At the Virginia Military Institute, he was a four-year starter on the football team. After delivering the valedictorian address at his graduation, Mr. Young reported to the Chicago Bears as a free agent.
Students made adequate yearly progress as a district in the 2012 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, with two of seven buildings not meeting No Child Left Behind Act requirements for last year. PSSA scores were released last week. The middle school did not meet AYP in math due to scores from a subgroup of students with individualized education plans. Bon Meade Elementary also did not meet AYP in math or reading in that subgroup.
Allard, Brooks and McCormick elementaries, along with the high school, increased scores when compared with the previous year. Hyde Elementary made AYP with the inclusion of a subgroup for economically disadvantaged students.
"We will target our efforts to students who are not performing at proficiency levels in math and reading. We intend to focus on these students' individual needs in order to close the achievement gap," said Donna Milanovich, Moon Area superintendent.
PSSA tests are given annually to students in grades 3-8 and 11 to evaluate public schools in Pennsylvania as required by federal law and measure student achievement in reading, mathematics, science and writing.
In preparation of the annual dinner and auction Nov. 16, Robinson Township Christian School is seeking donations to raise money for the school. Individuals and businesses are invited to donate new items or services to be auctioned.
