David Roussos, a former board member, has been appointed by Common Please Judge Alan Hertzberg to fill the seat of Thomas DiPietro who resigned June 30.
Mr. Roussos who had served on the board from Dec. 2003-Nov. 2009 is a Crafton resident. He holds a license as a finance attorney and CPA. Mr. Roussos had won nominations on the Democratic and Republican ballots in the May primary.
He, Mark Popovich of Carnegie and John Meighan of Crafton appeared Monday before Judge Hertzberg to apply for the vacant school board seat. The judge made the appointment because the school board failed to do so.
Parents, students, teachers and taxpayers are invited to learn about and discuss the development of freshman academies at a meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the high school/middle school large group instruction area, Thoms Run Road, Collier.
The creation of smaller learning communities or "academies," will be phased in beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.

A contract agreement has been reached between the school district and administrative staff.
Board President Mark Scappe said the five-year pact includes a pay freeze for the first year. Members Sandra McCurdy and Jeffrey Bussard were opposed.
"We hope for no more stoppage of work now," Mr. Scappe joked, referring to the three-week strike by teachers last fall. Agreements with the teacher and support staff unions were reached earlier this year.
In other board news:
• A contract was awarded to J.C. Pierce LLC for architectural and construction management services for the design and construction of athletic facilities at the softball and baseball fields. The contract is not to exceed $15,000.
• The board awarded a $58,800 contract for the field house drainage project to Mariani & Richards Inc.
• A $3,970 contract was awarded to Watt Fencing Inc. to install additional fencing at the Brooks Elementary ball field.
