The district will receive $150,000 in the first year of a three-year 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the state education department. The district also has been tentatively funded for $192,000 for the second year and $210,000 for the third year to be used for after-school programming for students in grades 2-5.
Each of the varsity athletic teams at the high school this year is participating in a community service project to increase team spirit and teach student athletes the importance of giving back to others.
The football team bundled and distributed toys in December for the Salvation Army.
The gymnastics team set up, prepared and served food to homeless and needy people in conjunction with First United Methodist Church's First Food and Friends Project in Shadyside.
The soccer team sponsored a tournament bracket for players in seven age groups, with more than 40 teams participating. The players collected food and cash donations, made schedules and signs, registered teams, refereed and handed out awards. They collected more than $300 and 13 boxes of food.
South Fayette Middle School will host the Western Area Middle Schools Honors Band Concert at 1 p.m. Saturday.
About 130 middle school instrumentalists from South Fayette, Chartiers Valley, West Allegheny, Moon Area, Montour, Carlynton, Sto-Rox and Cornell will perform at the high school theater, Old Oakdale Road.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, sold at the door. Info: www.southfayette.org .
• The Band Alumni Association will host An Evening of Music at 7 p.m. March 1 in the high school theater, Old Oakdale Road. The high school concert band, West Hills Symphonic Band and an ensemble of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians will perform.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for students and Senior Citizen Gold Card members. Proceeds benefit alumni association scholarships for two seniors in the Little Green Machine Marching/Concert Band.
