In the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program, 20 West Allegheny High School students in grades 9-12 won 31 awards in the visual art and photography categories. Luke Kandracs and Kelly Wiesner captured Gold Key awards in the ceramics and glass, and drawing categories respectively. Among the Silver Key Award winners was Blair Conner with nine awards.
• Hyde Elementary students Alyssa Haydon and Hunter Wilson received the Moon Area School District's Tiger Spirit Award on Feb. 11. High School seniors Dalton Finnell and Lauren Pollastro were Spirit Award winners in January.
• Dawn VanderWagen, a math major from Beaver Falls and student at Geneva College, has received the George Polovina scholarship, established by his sister, Sophia Polovina White. Mr. White taught mathematics at Aliquippa High school.
Dwight Morris, a chemical engineering major from Beaver Falls, and Ian Stear, a chemical engineering major from Bucks County each received Walter Polovina scholarships in support of science majors, established by his children, Jeffrey, Joseph and Linda Polovina.
• Ashley Wuenstel, a sophomore at Carlynton High School and a first-year automotive technology student, is a recent AM student of the month at Parkway West Career and Technology Center in North Fayette. Angela Favarella, a sophomore from Moon Area High School and a first-year culinary arts student is a recent PM student of the month.
• Barbianne Davis of Ambridge, a registered nurse with Heritage Valley Health System, is among five health care professionals nationally to win the 10th annual Cherokee Inspired Comfort Award.
