Coraopolis

Evan Gregorius has become the first student from Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School to serve as a junior council member.

He will serve as a non-voting member of council and will report high school events.

Lydia Ponticel of Cornell High School, the other junior council applicant, also is expected to join council at its next meeting.

• Applicants are being accepted for a new community group, Citizens for Coraopolis.

First Ward councilman Bill Del Monaco said the group would serve as a welcome wagon and a neighborhood watch group.

They also would plant flowers and work on neighborhood improvements.

The group will meet on the first and second Wednesday after monthly council meetings.

Agents from the Pittsburgh field office of the FBI will offer a free program, Identity Theft Protection for Seniors, at 10 a.m. today in the municipal building.

The program will discuss warn individuals about becoming targets of identity theft, phone fraud and similar scams.

South Fayette

Commissioners voted 5-0 on Sept. 19 to adopt a seismic testing ordinance.

The regulations, which had been pending since last fall, continue to prohibit explosives as a method of Marcellus Shale exploration.

Revisions adopted in the final draft include adding a $4,000 escrow to reimburse the township for employee expenses; requiring two weeks' notice prior to gaining a permit and again prior to conducting tests; doubling the amount of bonding from $250,000 to $500,000; and raising the amount of required liability insurance from $1 million to $5 million.
