West Allegheny school directors tonight approved an extended kindergarten program to supplement regular half-day sessions.

Next school year, the nonprofit corporation Extended Day Services of Upper St. Clair will offer a half-day enrichment program opposite regular morning or afternoon kindergarten sessions.

The educational program will be held at Wilson Elementary School in Findlay. Pupils from McKee and Donaldson elementary schools may participate, but parents must provide transportation.

Parents will pay a fee for their children to participate five days a week. There is no cost to the district.

A certified teacher will reinforce literacy, math, and other skills that are taught in the regular classroom, said Christine Assetta, assistant to the superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

West Allegheny does not offer full-day kindergarten, she said, "so we see this as the next best thing."
