SOUTH FAYETTE

Park-n-ride will open Sept. 5

The Port Authority will open a park-n-ride lot Sept. 5 on Route 50 at the former Star City Cinemas parking lot adjacent to the Bridgeville exit on Interstate 79.

The movie theater has been purchased by South Fayette and will be converted into a municipal complex. The lot will offer 125 parking spaces and will be free for commuters.

The new lot will be served by the following routes:

• 31 Bridgeville (formerly 31D and 31E) -- Buses will operate seven days a week between Downtown and the park-n-ride via Millers Run Road, then along current 31D routing.

• G31 Bridgeville Flyer (formerly 33D and 33E) -- Buses will operate on weekdays between Downtown and the park-n-ride via Millers Run Road and Route 50 to Carothers Avenue, Main Street and Mansfield Avenue to the West Busway.

PENN STATE COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

Food safety training workshop

Penn State Cooperative Extension in Beaver County, in cooperation with Big Knob Grange, will offer a workshop, "Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer's Guide to Safe Food Handling," from 6:30 to 9 p.m. July 29 at Big Knob Grange, 336 Grange Road, Rochester.

The cost of the workshop is $3.

Nonprofit volunteer groups that prepare food to be served or sold to the public must be sure that the food is safe and of high quality. Food that is not prepared safely may lead to a foodborne outbreak resulting in serious illness or even death.

Workshop participants will learn up-to-date methods for safely handling and preparing food for large groups. The workshop is for nonprofit food providers such as churches, fire companies, schools, and civic groups.

Cooking for Crowds manuals for organizations and/or participants can be purchased for $9 per manual and will be available at the workshop.

CARNEGIE

Clothing and toy distribution

SS. Peter and Paul Church, 220 Mansfield Blvd., Carnegie, will conduct a clothing and toy distribution from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday to aid residents affected by the June 5 flooding in the borough.

Donations for this distribution may be dropped off from 10 a.m. to noon today and from 8 a.m. until noon Sunday.

And monetary donations are still needed to repair or replace damaged household items such as furnaces, hot water tanks and dehumidifiers. Checks may be made payable to the Greater Chartiers Valley Community Outreach, 601 Washington Ave., Carnegie, PA 15106.
