In hope of bolstering math scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment, administrators at Sto-Rox High School have added the Apangea Math program to the curriculum. The program will operate in the junior class this year, and may expand to all grades as finances allow.

"We can find the money," Superintendent Michael Panza assured the directors before they voted to buy the program at January's board meeting. Programming for the junior class will cost $2,000.

Sto-Rox was one of four Allegheny County school districts that did not meet Adequate Yearly Progress requirements for the PSSA in 2011.

Teachers also will conduct a series of math blitzes to assess strengths and weaknesses before the test on March 12. Data gathered during these blitzes will be used to direct instruction.

"In the short term, we hope to see gains in achievement from last year. But, we ultimately want to create a swell within our school community around the fact that effort creates ability," Principal Heath Bailey wrote in an email. "We are trying to erase apathy and learned helplessness around the state assessment."

Pittsburgh-based Apangea Learning Inc. is providing the web-based adaptive math intervention program, which offers tutoring with teachers. Initially, students work online with automated learning coaches. When a student needs to have additional help, they can connect with a certified math teacher who provides individual assistance.

The program includes such topics as algebraic problem solving, fractions, percentages, integers, formulas, geometry and patterns.

Students are being encouraged to use the program during school and at home. Mr. Bailey, who came to Sto-Rox from the Pittsburgh Public Schools, thinks working with the program will give students "intrinsic motivation" while preparing for the test.
