Scrap yard fire probed in Aliquippa

Hazardous materials crews and firefighters are investigating a scrap yard fire reported early Monday in Aliquippa.
Between 200 and 300 junked automobiles, stacked about 30 feet high, burned for about three hours before firefighters extinguished the blaze, fire Chief Dave Foringer said.
The first crews at the scene said flames spewed as high as 60 feet in the air from the massive, burning pile of cars. Alarms were sounded to bring in help from other firefighting agencies, the chief said.
The fire was reported at about 2 a.m. at Aliquippa Recycling and Bronze Resources at Woodlawn Road and Steel Street.
Firefighters were cautious concerning gasoline and other automotive fluids, some of which caused small explosions and helped fuel the blaze.
Chief Foringer said there were no injuries. The fire had no affect on properties at a nearby industrial park.
The flames were under control by 5 a.m., he said.
