Robinson considers electronic billboards

Robinson may update the township zoning code to address electronic billboards.
Commissioners voted tonight to advertise a revised ordinance and to hold a public hearing on the changes at 6 p.m. Jan. 7 in the municipal building, 1000 Church Hill Road.
Planning director Rick Urbano said the planning commission favors revising the code because "they know it's been stale for a number of years."
Mr. Urbano developed the revisions in cooperation with Lamar Advertising Co. of Pittsburgh, which has been trying unsuccessfully for five years to install an electronic billboard at 5320 Steubenville Pike in Robinson.
According to a letter from Lamar's attorney, David F. Toal, the township code does not clearly outline what the company must do to gain approval for the sign.
Mr. Toal wrote that the updates recognize the emergence of electronic signs as a major part of outdoor advertising and address issues raised in prior legal proceedings.
