Rental units may increase in North Fayette

North Fayette has broadened the opportunity to build apartments in the township.
Supervisors voted 3-0 on Tuesday night to approve a zoning revision that allows high-rise and garden-style apartments in business districts.
Development director Laura Ludwig said the change helps meet the needs of young professionals and senior citizens who prefer apartment living to home ownership and who want to take advantage of local businesses.
Vice chairman James R. Mangan said the township has plenty of single-family homes but needs more housing variety.
"It's a good thing to kind of mix up our development," he said.
Business owner Pamela Kaplan supported further development in the Route 30 corridor and more housing to retain older residents in the West Allegheny community.
"It would be good to have some way not to constantly move our parents out of the district, or retire ourselves out of the district," she said.
A developer interested in constructing apartments for senior citizens has been evaluating a property on Old Steubenville Pike in Imperial and a 10-acre ballfield site in the Hankey Farms area, Ms. Ludwig said.
Also, two other developers have been considering purchase of a vacant, 17-acre site on Summit Park Drive in The Pointe at North Fayette for an apartment complex, she said.
Supervisors also voted to define and regulate "retail food restaurants" in the zoning ordinance due to some interest from potential takeout-only eateries.
