More than 20 police departments will participate in a training exercise from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at South Fayette High School on Old Oakdale Road.

Students will not be on campus at the time because of winter break.

About 45 officers and numerous emergency vehicles from departments in the CharWest Council of Governments will be at the high school for a drill involving a mock critical incident, South Fayette police Chief Louis Volle said. The training will be for an active shooter, he said.

Chief Volle said the exercise has been planned since October and is not in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting last month in Connecticut.

Among the departments joining South Fayette in the drill will be Bridgeville, Oakdale, Robinson, Moon, Green Tree, Carnegie and McKees Rocks.
