North Fayette takes steps to build community center

Plans to build a community center in North Fayette are under way.
Township staff is reviewing 10 proposals from architects interested in designing the center.
The planning commission approved the development Tuesday and forwarded the plan to supervisors for preliminary approval.
The township manager and engineer presented plans for a two-story building with a gymnasium and 154 parking spaces on 9 acres in Donaldson Community Park, near West Allegheny's Donaldson Elementary School.
Manager Bob Grimm said construction of the $2.5 million to $3 million facility will begin with 16,000 to 18,000 square feet of space, with an additional 10,000 to 12,000 square feet to be built "as growth dictates and funds dictate."
The goal is to start construction in spring 2014 and to open for North Fayette's annual Community Days in August 2015, Mr. Grimm said.
This summer, the township plans to relocate the outdoor tennis and basketball courts from the North Branch Road municipal complex to the community center site, he said.
Mr. Grimm said he hopes to select an architect by the end of March and have a completed design by the end of the year.
Total project cost could be up to $4 million, including design and engineering, he said.
The township is in the process of finalizing the purchase of 9.127 acres from the Kelley family, who own land adjacent to the 34-acre Donaldson Community Park.
The community center site plan was prepared by township engineer Kevin Brett of Lennon, Smith, Souleret Engineering Inc. of Coraopolis.
The planning commission voted 5-0 to approve the preliminary development plan and land subdivision, and also voted to recommend supervisors schedule a public hearing on a conditional-use application for the center.
