Visitors should be prepared to have identification when entering any of Moon Area's school buildings.

Directors Monday approved the purchase of a visitor badge and tracking system for use in its elementary buildings. The units will be installed within a few weeks. Similar security procedures are in place in the middle and high school buildings.

In a letter to Moon Area families Jan. 24, superintendent Donna Milanovich wrote: "In the light of the recent tragedy in our nation, we know that many of you have concerns about the safety of your children. Safety is a top priority in the Moon Area School District, and we continue to collaborate with the Moon Township Police Department to make sure that our schools are as safe as possible."

She also wrote that each building has a crisis management plan and that administrators are re-evaluating safety procedures.

Improvement to safety procedures include purchase of the check-in units, which are designed to scan the driver's license or state identification of any visitor. The unit can provide a background check, then print out a visitor badge.

The units cost approximately $1,600 each, $8,000 for Moon and Crescent's five elementary schools.

Known as the School Check-In program, it can also track when visitors enter and leave a building, perform nationwide sex offender searches and track parents/guardians who have authority to pick up students.

Currently, staff copy information from the visitor's license and hold it while the person is in the school.

"[This is] just another level of security we are trying to introduce," Mrs. Milanovich said Monday.
