Man admits fatal stabbing of former girlfriend

A Carnegie man pleaded guilty Monday to third-degree murder in the slaying of his ex-girlfriend.
Jeffrey A. Maloy, 27, stabbed 35-year-old Melissa Bowers to death in the early morning hours of Feb. 8 at an apartment on Railroad Street after he had been drinking heavily. Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Edward Borkowski sentenced Maloy to 20 to 40 years in prison.
Maloy called his father shortly after the stabbing and confessed what he had done. When police arrived at the apartment, he was in bloodied clothing outside and told them "I messed up."
Inside, they found Ms. Bowers partially clothed with a knife in her back.
Colleen Bowers, the victim's mother, told Judge Borkowski that her daughter's death has devastated the family, including the slain woman's two children.
"There were no words to describe the pain," she said.
Asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Maloy turned to Ms. Bowers' family and said through tears, "That I'm sorry."
Choking back sobs, he told them he was so drunk that he couldn't even remember killing Ms. Bowers.
"This is he most horrible thing that I ever could have done," he said.
