A freight train passing through McKees Rocks derailed this afternoon, leaving one car leaning off a railroad bridge.

One car derailed entirely, and the ends of two other cars derailed from the track near Thompson Avenue and Furnace Street Extension close to Creek Road around 3:51 p.m.

Michael Lundell, a spokesman for Genesee & Wyoming Inc., which owns that section of the Pittsburgh & Ohio Central Railroad, said the cars were empty and damage was minimal.

No injuries were reported, and no hazardous materials were released.

"For public safety the road was closed down until we could assess what we needed to do make sure everything was safe," Mr. Lundell said.

The incident is under investigation.
