Former fire chief faces trial on DUI charge

The former chief of a Washington County fire department will face trial on a charge that in March he drove a department-owned truck to a medical call while intoxicated.
Following a preliminary hearing Monday, District Judge Valerie Costanzo held Donald Hindman, 49, who headed the Lawrence Fire Department in Cecil, for trial on a DUI charge, his second this year.
He resigned after the March incident.
Cecil police Chief John Pushak said police and the department's medics were summoned to a domestic dispute on Filkhorn Drive about 3:20 a.m. on March 18. Mr. Hindman arrived at the scene in a pickup truck owned by the department and went into the home, where paramedics were already helping the woman.
Chief Pushak said officers noticed Mr. Hindman was unsteady on his feet and had glassy and bloodshot eyes as well as slurred speech. They asked him to leave the house and he attempted to get into the truck to drive away.
Officers asked him to get out of the truck and performed a field sobriety test, which he failed, Chief Pushak said.
Mr. Hindman remains free on $10,000 unsecured bond.
